All engines are motors but not all motors are engines.

What I was taught is an engine makes its own power.

And a motor has its power supplied.

I believe an engine converts thermal to mechanical energy. It is still a type of motor.

Not from what I learned in electronics and automotive, and college.

They always stressed that motors were electric. And that Engines were internal combustion.

Well, I have to defer to your expertise, then... but I'll be looking it up later.

How Google defines "motor"

a machine, esp. one powered by electricity or internal combustion, that supplies motive power for a vehicle or for some other device with moving parts

If internal combustion engines aren't motors, then the Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Toyota Motor Corporation, American Honda Motor Company (and more) should change their names and Google is wrong.

Feel free to challenge me. I could be wrong, but that is just what I learned.

No challenge intended, just curious as I've never heard that before. One of us should come up with a source.

Webster's defines motor as "a machine that produces motion or power for doing work", while an engine is "a machine that changes energy (such as heat from burning fuel) into mechanical motion."

However, if you check the Thesaurus, motor is given as a synonym for engine , but engine is not given as a synonym for motor . Therefore, I believe that motor can be a generic term for engine.

The Online Etymology Dictionary supports the idea that engine is a device that uses fuel to convert energy to motion, saying "At first meaning a trick or device, or any machine (especially military); sense of "device that converts energy to mechanical power" is 18c., especially of steam engines.

My source is schooling.. haha

And what I've heard from others.

Even at work if you call it a Motor you get slapped.

But what I've heard is a motor used some power source to produce motion.

And engine creates its own motion (converting heat or whatever)

Calling an engine a motor completely messes up what I've learned in high school, college and work.. haha

Never heard of a "Rat Engine", or an "Engine bike".

And that's where the nuance of meaning can be so important. I think your own understanding of the difference is correct. An electric motor imparts motion to something, but the energy for that motion, the electricity, was generated somewhere else. An engine creates its own energy by burning fuel. A steam engine creates its own energy by boiling water to make steam.

Since the word motor comes to us from the Latin and means mover , anything that imparts motion into another thing could correctly be called a motor. An engine is a motor because (in our case) it moves a car. But by definition, a motor is not an engine since it requires a separate source of energy.

I could be talking out my ass, but it sure sounds good.

Rat engine? I've never heard of a rat motor... Rat rod yes.

I see the argument on the Motorcycle part. But its motorvehicle with 2 wheels a cycle.

I'm not sure how to argue the motorcycle bit to fit my point.

You make a valid point even if you were talking out of your ass.

I see why an engine can be a motor if it is moving a vehicle or whatever.

A "Rat Motor" is the nickname for a Chevy big block.
